Comparison of Sexual Function between Pre-menopausal and Post-menopausal Women by BISF-W (Brief Index of Sexual Functioning for Women) Questionnaire

Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare between premenopause and postmenopause in sexual functioning by the BISF-W questionnaire among women. Methods: 128 healthy women were classified as pre- and postmenopausal according to menstrual cycle characteristics. Women were randomized to survey by BISF-W questionnaire. Sexual functioning was measured in terms of dimensions D1 (Thoughts/Desire), D2 (Arousal), D3 (Frequency of Sexual Activity), D4 (Receptivity/ Initiation), D5 (Pleasure/Orgasm), D6 (Relationship Satisfaction), D7 (Problems affecting Sexual Function), and composite score. Results: Symptoms during sexual intercourse such as vaginal bleeding or irritation, pain, vaginal tightness, involuntary urination, headache, and vaginal infection was significantly greater for post-menopausal women. The dimensions D2 (Arousal), D3 (Frequency of Sexual Activity), D5 (Pleasure/Orgasm), D6 (Relationship Satisfaction), and the composite score decreased significantly for the post-menopausal women with D7 (Problems affecting Sexual Function) was significantly increase. Conclusion: Menopause status is related to some, but not all, aspects of sexual functioning. Problems such as vaginal bleeding or irritation, pain, vaginal tightness, involuntary urination, headache, and vaginal infection affect the sexual function in the post-menopausal women.
